The apps I use

By Aneesah, 6 Jan 10

Hello people. I swear I am — this — close to finishing the new layout, but darn IE and it’s petty issues and I still need to sort out some kinks, but take a sneak peek:

PeekAneesah’s Hideaway version… I don’t even know.

See. I am not lying. I’ll talk more about it when it’s up. Anyhow, I really do prefer the new version of WordPress that I installed on my comp (like I’ve mentioned before, the one this site is running on is ancient); it’s much cleaner and friendlier.

My computer is now running on Windows 7. As you might know, I had massive issues with Windows XP in the past, and used Ubuntu for almost a year, and then back to XP. I avoided Vista like the plague. But Windows 7 seems much better, I liked that it searched for and installed the necessary drivers on its own, and is very tablet-friendly (especially for Tablet PCs, but still — I’m back to using the tablet as a mouse now, which I didn’t do with XP because of its tendency to suddenly un-recognise itself). I still dislike the many notifications, and how the screen flickers/dims/blacks out before one such notification. Seriously scares my socks off every time. :suspicious:

I made a list (a real physical one, on a post-it note :D ) of software that I used before I wiped my computer clean to install Windows 7. And I thought I’d share it here, with Firefox add-ons that I use too, in case they’re helpful to anyone. The stuff that are freeware (or not, but I want you to check them out anyway) are linked to their respective websites.

The basics:
  • Mozilla Firefox: main web browser.
  • Google Chrome: backup browser. Also downloaded to check that the new layout looks ok in it.
  • Yahoo! Messenger 10
  • Skype: I’m not on Skype much anymore, since YM’s video calls are usually excellent. Except for the fact that I can’t have the screens always on top of all other windows like Skype. Oh, and Skype’s not friendly with WampServer, I don’t know why.
  • Microsoft Office 2007: Though I mainly only use Word and Publisher.
The editors:
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4
  • IrfanView: main image viewer / quick editor.
  • Photoscape: main edits, if I don’t want to open up Photoshop. I used to use Picasa, but I like Photoscape better.
  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS3: web-editing.
  • AutoCAD 2010: schoolwork lalalalala.
  • MemoriesOnTV: video / slideshow editing.
The utilities:
  • Adobe Acrobat: aside from reading PDFs, I use this to print “poster-style” stuff, ie. A4 pages that tile to form a larger image.
  • 7-zip: a total essential.
  • Allway Sync: for backing up files to my external hard drive.
  • Athan: because I’m not in Malaysia anymore (where I can hear the athan from outside my window).
  • Orbit Downloader: for downloading embedded videos.
  • VLC Player: main video/audio player. Though Windows Media Player isn’t bad.
  • WampServer: for running WordPress on my computer.
The Firefox add-ons:

Not that long of a list, eh? :P I still need 3D Studio Max, I think, but I’ll get around to that when term starts.

Anyway, I’m actually off to Spain for a week beginning tomorrow, 7 January. And when I get back, winter hols are almost over… Why are holidays never long enough? Update on my swollen hand: Apparently I need blood tests done for a proper diagnosis, and the first attempt today proved unfruitful (unbloodful?). Absolutely nothing would come out — I blame the cold, snowy weather. :shakefist: My poor punctured arms… The next try at squeezing four tubes of blood out of me will be after I come back from Spain. So more delays in solving the problem and more time I’ll have to endure the itching and discomfort. :( Oh well. There’s a reason for everything.

Pray for our safe journey, I’ll be back!

Unblooodful! Isk! Saffa harap semua okay nanti. Aminn..
And Theme tu lawa sangat but macam mengingatkan Saffa dekat Aisyah punya blog (sebab background dia warna coklat macam cupboard).. Huhu..
Lepas ni konfem Saffa selalu bukak blog Aneesah semata-mata nak tengok theme blog Aneesah! Hahaha…

Your new layout looks good. I hope you are able to get it up soon. I’ve been debating switching to Windows 7. I currently use Vista and haven’t had any problems with it. I’m scared that if I switch, my computer will stop working right.

    Have fun on your trip!

  3. Skype’s not friendly with WampServer? What do you mean? I have both installed and it’s working fine for me.

Ooh, I’m going to checkout that Allway Sync. I need something to sync up my stuff too…

But yeah, man, I SO want Windows 7, but I can’t install it just yet! =( I should have taken the advantage of doing that over the holidays when work wasn’t so busy. Damn it. =( Oh well… Anyways, have a great trip, and be safe! =)

  4. asma says:

    windows 7 is awesome!!!!
n ya… i also avoid using vista like plague lol!

  5. Aneesah says:

    I mean I can’t seem to have both programs running at the same time. :( WampServer won’t run properly, I think they share the same port or something of that sort, some googling led me to that answer. ^^;

  6. Aneesah says:

Haha, cardboard, you mean? :P Ha’ah, it’s one of the default Photoshop patterns so I just played around with it. Theme tu kena tunggu next week la kot nak put up, sekarang malas lagi nak sambung edit. It’s so much work. X(

  7. Aelyn says:

Salaam! The new design looks nice, can’t wait to see it implemented. Sorry for dropping in as a total stranger, but THANK YOU for Photoscape. I usually use PS for everything but this is just lighter to work with for those quick little things. And it’s fun, which is a bonus. I’ve tried Picassa before, but it didn’t grow on me.

As for Add-ons… my list is longer. :P Though, one thing I must need is the Undo Closed Tabs Button Add-on. I feel lost without it. Hmm… HTML Validator comes in handy for quick validating if you’re into all that… it’s definitely much easier than manually doing it through Web Developer. :)

  8. Yeah, you may have to change the port. If I use WampServer, I always have Skype open because it’s my work laptop, and it works fine for me.

  9. TWD says:

Ooh, the new layout looks cute! :D Also, thumbs up to Windows 7–I have a tablet PC with a touchscreen and it’s quite fun to scroll with my hand!

Insha’Allah your trip goes well and your hand feels better! From what I’ve seen, Spain has some beautiful architecture.

  10. Jen says:

I don’t mind Vista — my laptop runs Vista, and it works fine for me — but that’s mainly because I like pretty and Vista is a lot prettier than XP. My desktop runs Windows 7 — the taskbar took a lot of getting used to, but now that I’ve been using it for a while, it’s quite nifty and organized! I only get the fading notification thing when I turn off my computer when there’s a billion programs open but then it closes them for me :P
Though! AutoCAD is the death of me.

  11. Oh photoscape. WIll have to try that. Photoshop seems too heavy for my laptop sometimes.

Oh yeah, I tagged you. :)

  12. Nabeelah says:

Oh dear you are SO good at this thing. Computers and their insides, virtual or otherwise.
    Unlike me. X(

  13. Aneesah says:

Wa’alaikumsalaam! Oh no worries, I like comments from strangers! ^_^ I agree, most people wouldn’t really need Photoshop to edit pictures (for the web); it’s much quicker and makes more sense to just make adjustments in Photoscape.

  14. Aneesah says:

    Thanks a bunch! Spain was great, definitely some beautiful places there. My fingers seems to have shrunk again, though the skin still has some issues… Blood tests are in the works though, so hopefully things will settle soon. ^^;

  15. Aneesah says:

Haha, computer knowledge is inescapable in my family. I’m certain even Salman knows more about technology than I do. :suspicious:

  16. Tricia says:

I’ll upgrade to Windows 7 as well. :D I’m currently using Vista. :D
Nice theme you got there! I like! :D

  17. Ariane says:

So Windows 7 isn’t as bad as Vista was when it first came out? Hmm. Now seriously contemplating getting it if and when I get a new laptop. I’ve always been an XP fangirl, though…xD

The new layout looks awesome, by the way. ;)

  18. Dayna says:

I love the green in the new layout, can’t wait to see it! :)
I’m stuck with Vista currently. Upgrading to 7 will cost a bomb and I’m not too bothered by Vista yet since it’s still running all right even though it’s getting slower and slower.

Thanks for the recommendation list above. I’m looking at installing Inline Google Definitions, no more frequent dictionary searches. :)

  19. Aileen says:

We’ve some in common in terms of utilities – Mozilla Firefox & VLC Player :boogie:
The new layout you’re working on rocks – it totally suits your personality  . I am reminded of arts & crafts when I see patterns like that. It’s probably because the curtains/sheets/wallpaper in my room is of a similar design – & that’s where I do most of my messy/creative stuff
